The State -- Toyota is recalling nearly half a million cars, most of them large sedans sold in the U.S., for problems that can cause the steering wheel to lock up. It’s the latest indication that the automaker is still struggling with vehicle problems even as it works to overhaul quality control. The recall, announced Thursday, affects 412,000 vehicles in the U.S. – 373,000 Avalon sedans and 39,000 Lexus LX 470 SUVs.

Not good news for Toyota. Even if this problem is only minor (and similar to the recalss from other auto companies), the pattern of continued recalls is problematic for the company right now.

I think I will just continue to drive my 11 year old BMW with 235,000 miles on it. Only problem I have had is I had to have my transmission rebuilt at 210,000 and it cost me $1,900.00. I also get 30mpg on the highway. Why the heck would I want an overpriced Toyota/Lexus?

I have a 10 year old GMC Sonoma pick up truck. Interior looks like new, exterior very good except where careless people put two dents in the side when they opened up their doors and hit the truck. I have a total of approx. $250 in unscheduled maint. repairs. No problem owning this American made product.

Still not convinced about American-made. My Buick's interior is coming apart! The dashboard popped up, the ceiling cloth droops all over, the windows stick and can't go up nor down, the hubcaps paint peels! My Ford Taurus' transmission gave out and wasn't worth $1000 without a repair of $2000.

Toyota? Again? Getting the free publicity is a good thing but they're going about it in the wrong way....*smirk*

These recalls are still a leftover from days past when production instead of quality was the incentive of Toyota. They will get past this and do fine. However, I hope Ford keeps up the good work and completely surpasses Toyota on all fronts.

Toyota's safety recalls are not a big surprise anymore -- buy American-made vehicles.
