Understand this; unless adequate crude oil goes through the Alyeska pipeline each day, NOTHING will keep the trans-Alaska pipeline in service. No other substitute will do. An obvious solution is to ship more oil. There are vast, untapped quantities of oil around Alaska's North Slope. If the U.S. federal government 1.) makes the land available for exploration and production and 2.) permits such activities, then there will be LOTS of North American crude oil available for many years to come, temporarily reducing America's dependence on imports from those who sell us oil and give some of those revenues to those who intend to do us harm. In time, we can move from energy independence to renewable self-sufficiency. If we don't, our grandchildren and their children will curse us for our short-sightedness.

Boycott Big Oil, not just BP! Use less! Make your vehicle more fuel efficient! Use a more fuel efficient vehicle, walk, ride, use a bike, etc. Put more in your pocket! Save more, have more to invest, more to use as you wish, more to help others, etc. It's better for you and everyone!

What did President George Bush do about the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill? He never went to Alaska. I don't recall he said much about it, nor was there any clamor about getting the President involved. The Coast Guard did its duty. Exxon's contractors -- outsiders and local outfitters, fishermen, and boat owners cleaned up the mess as directed by Exxon. Lawyers filed claims on behalf of people who incurred damages. The litigation is finally winding down 21 years later. How and why should we expect something radically different in the Gulf?
